I am running a web server in OSX Mavericks using the default directory location ( $HOME/Sites ). How can I add sites from distinct arbitrary directories ?

Open Terminal.app . It's under Applications->Utilities . Run ifconfig in the terminal. That shows you all the network interfaces on the machine.

The web server root folder for a particular web site configured within OS X Server is displayed on the site configuration page within Server.app.

You need to put your site in /Library/WebServer (not sure about WebServer part but it should be similar) and make sure permissions are correct.

Navigate to any directory you want the server to run in cd /path/to/dir/with/files. Launch HTTP server http-server. Launch HTTP server on different port.

Use your terminal, cd into your project folder then type: npx http-server. That should start up a server for you and will be available on: http://127.0.0.1: ...

The default Apache root folder (localhost/) is /Library/WebServer/Documents. Also, make sure you have the PHP5 module loaded in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf.
